Nyangani Renewable Energy (Pvt) Ltd, based in Harare, designs, builds and operates both run of river hydroelectric power schemes and solar PV power schemes to deliver electricity into the Zimbabwe and Malawi national grids.

The hydroelectric schemes are on the rivers flowing from the Nyangani Massif in eastern Zimbabwe and from Mount Mulanje in Malawi. The solar scheme is in Mutoko, Zimbabwe.

NRE has built 44MW of generation capacity. In 2023 we delivered into the national grids 155,000 MWh of electricity. This is enough power to supply approximately 431,000 people in the region with electricity for a year and because it was all from renewable electricity, we reduced carbon emissions by 32,095 tonnes of CO2 in 2023.

NRE help empower local communities through its work with the Honde Valley Hydroelectric Power Trust (HVHEPT) which has, amongst other community projects, connected 52 schools to the national grid.

Highlights

The Pungwe B scheme was commissioned at the beginning of February 2015. The scheme has a rated output of 15MW. The offtake point is at 1,096m above sea level and the turbines are at 915m to give a head of 181m. The distance from the offtake point to the water returning to the river is 2,000m.

The maximum water flow through the penstock is 12,000 litres per second. This feeds 4 turbines, each of 3.75MW capacity. The electricity is transmitted into the national grid through a new dedicated 33KV line that runs into the Nyanga 132KV substation.

The Riverside Solar Power Station occupies a 40-hectare site outside Mutoko, Zimbabwe. The first stage of the development was to install 2.5MW of capacity on one quarter of the available land.

The first stage has been developed using a variety of technologies. Both mono and poly crystalline panels have been installed on both fixed and tracking frames.

The Nyanga substation upgrade was commissioned in July 2019 and comprised of installing a 132kV / 33kV 50MVA transformer in parallel with an existing 30MVA transformer.

This project increased the substations capacity, redundancy and allowed the station to manage all the power that is generated at our Honde and Nyanga power plants.
